Many people know lucerne (alfalfa) only as feed for livestock, but traditional medicine has long used it as a medicinal plant. In the aerial parts of lucerne, primarily in the leaves, contains a large amount of beta-carotene, vitamins B, C, D, E and K, minerals - calcium, iron, potassium and phosphorus. Because of the high chlorophyll content lucerne has a strong antitoxic action.
Lucerne is successfully used for the treatment of chronic and acute diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, ulcers, to improve appetite. It contains a large amount of vitamin U, which helps to cure peptic ulcer (stomach, duodenum and colon). Lucerne has an alkaline effect, which helps to neutralize excess gastric juice. It also contains substances that suppress the development of mold fungi.
