Ginkgo biloba is one of the most ancient trees in the history of the Earth. It existed, probably, already 200 million years ago during the Carboniferous period of Earth's history, so it is often called a living fossil. Despite this, its wide use in the western world began only since the 18 th century (the first seedlings were planted in 1730 in the Netherlands). Thanks to its remarkable properties, today it is one of the most popular medicinal herbs.
Homeland of Ginkgo is China, but, thanks to its popularity, it is now widely distributed throughout the world. Due to the fact that the climate in China has remained moderate both during and post-glacial period, it lasted all this time without any changes. In ancient China, ginkgo was revered as a sacred tree, because of its amazing properties and health benefits.
The active ingredients of ginkgo biloba can be divided into two groups: flavonoids and terpenes. The most important agents from the group of flavonoids are quercetin and kaempferol. Ginkgolide and bilobalide are the most active agents of terpenes. Both of these latter substances are found only in Ginkgo biloba.
Ginkgo flavonoids contribute to the normal operation of the circulatory system and adequate circulation, as well as the flow of oxygen and nutrients to cells. So ginkgo is particularly recommended for older people to maintain optimal performance of the brain, with fatigue, as well as those who often feel cold extremities. In addition, ginkgo is a powerful antioxidant, its active agents protect cells from damage by free radicals.
